NFL Odds and Lines

NFL odds are in place to level the playing field. Very seldom are NFL games contested on an even playing field. To make up for this, you must understand and check the NFL odds.

NFL odds are the sportsbook's or bookmaker's view of the chance of a competitor winning the bet adjusted to include a profit. Another way to define NFL odds is the likelihood of an outcome occurring, stated in number form. The "straight up" outcome is typically the basis of the wager, without regard to a point spread. Odds are often stated as a money line.

Understanding NFL odds can make the difference between winning and losing the bet. If we can take five minutes to learn about NFL odds and how to read them to increase our chances of picking a winner then why not?

Here’s an example of how you might see NFL odds and what they mean. You may see something like 10 to 1 odds on the Denver Broncos winning the Super Bowl. This means that for every one dollar you bet you would win 10. Not a bad payout! At the same time if you were to see NFL odds like 1 to 100 on the Indianapolis Colts winning the Super Bowl, that may not be the best bet, even though the Colts are the heavy favorites (in this example) you would only win one dollar for every $100 you would bet!

Can you imagine the difference that would make in your betting strategy if you read the NFL odds wrong, that could be the difference between winning hundreds of dollars and winning barely enough to take the bus home.

Now this is a very extreme example and the outcomes unlikely but now you can understand the importance of reading and understanding NFL odds. Know the odds, know betting.
